Coiled Basketry with Michelle Teear 

These intricate stitched woven forms are a simple yet stunning craft to wrap your fingers around! Learn the technique of coiling baskets using raffia and a needle. You’ll make your own vessel to treasure.

The traditional art of weaving has been an essential skill across most cultures of the world. Reclaim this addictive craft, its perfect for the beginner and the experienced weaver, with endless possibilities for individual exploration.  Get creative and unveil the beauty of this ancient craft, we challenge you not to get caught up in the weave!

You will learn:

·      The basic stitch and techniques for weaving

·      How to design your own basket or jewelry

·      Discuss foraging for your own fiber and processing

All materials supplied.

Please note: due to allergies, please refrain from wearing perfume or cologne, deodorant is ok.

Time : 10-2 pm

There will be a morning tea break with a range of local cafes to choose from.

    ABOUT YOUR TEACHER :

    Michelle Teear is an artist who centres the use of natural materials at the core of her creative practice. Primarily a painter working in egg tempera using natural and foraged pigments. She also forages for materials in nature to create basketry and to extract colour for dyeing. Her work moves between the landscape and abstract emotional spaces embedded in exploring identity.

    Michelle’s work has been a finalist in numerous prizes including the Evelyn Chapman award, Mosman, Paddington, Gosford and the Newcastle Club Foundation Prize. She has completed residencies at Mornington and Bundanon. She is an experienced art educator, and has provided workshops for UNSW and MAC Yapang. She is a peer for Museums & Galleries NSW & Bundanon and works in the promotion of access and inclusion for people with disability through Accessible Arts. Michelle is represented by Straitjacket.
