We are really excited to offer a School Term fibre arts program at Hive & Gobbler for kids, for which NSW CreativeKids vouchers can be used.

    What is Fibre Art?

Fiber art refers to art that is created using materials that consist mainly of natural or synthetic fibers and other components, such as fabric or yarn.

    Classes will consist of :

    • learning spinning and twining all sorts of materials to create string or yarn (using minimal equipment)
    • introduction to weaving (without a loom) using old clothing
    • introduction to basket weaving
    • introduction to felt making
Students will explore all these elements and techniques over 4 Saturdays, with sessions held fortnightly, using natural, upcycled and recycled materials.

Duration: Approx. 2 hours per session

Timings:  Held every second Saturday 10am-12pm, starting from Saturday 20 Feb), as follows:

         - Sat 20 Feb  (lesson #1)

         - Sat 6 Mar  (lesson #2)

         - Sat 20 Mar (lesson #3)

         - Sat 27 Mar (lesson #4) - to fit in before the school holidays start!  Only a week gap with last session for this reason.

Age:  This class is suited to children 5-18yrs. If there is enough interest in this class, students will be broken into separate primary and high school-aged groups.

Bring:  Please bring your own water bottle and any food your child requires, as part of our COVID-19 safety plan.

Hello!  I'm Petra Hilsen, a felt-maker working in Newcastle, Australia. I love the design and structural abilities wool offers. The therapeutic benefits are awesome.
I was born in Germany and came to Australia in 1982.  I was always interested in
textiles, first watching my grandmother who was a talented seamstress making
our clothes and my mother knitting socks and vests for us. I made clothes for my
dolls and dabbled in dress making. During Uni I took up spinning, weaving and
dying of wool.  Wool became my favourite medium. I took up felt-making in late
2014 and today I am working as a felt-maker and couldn't be happier.
Location: Rear of 211 Dowling Street, Dungog NSW

Please note that all workshops will be run outside if the weather is nice, so participants can enjoy our beautiful outdoor space. If it is too hot, windy or wet, we will be indoors in our air conditioned classroom space.
